does anyone know if it is possible to fit power steering to a 95 106 diesel,as my wife can no longer drive due to athritis in her hands

There should be no reason, the best way would be to find a scrap car and rob the parts. There are apparently a couple of different power racks, so you'd need to check it was going to fit and be able to get the pump to drive from the engine etc.

i have actually located a whole steering system which is supposedly electric,does this mean its not powered from the engine by a belt? and have been told it will fit my car comments please.

My copy of the Haynes manual it says that on models without air con, the pump is driven via the auxillary belt from the end of the camshaft. On models with air-con an electric pump is used. They typically don't get all the facts right for the read, as this describes a petrol model as the diesel has the vacuum pump on the other end of the camshaft. I would therefore say the electric pump set up you have would be suitable. You may find you need new track rods too as the connectors to the rack could be different. They do say power steering was an option on all models, so I should think you'l be fine.
